Leaked letter confirms opposition claims of fraud, coup d’état | GVF

GVF -- A newly surfaced document released by Iranian satellite TV channel, RASA, has raised further questions about the legitimacy of Ahmadinejad’s alleged “victory” during the 2009 presidential which Mousavi and Karroubi had described as nothing but an “engineered” and monumental fraud.

According to a classified communiqué released by the RASA (Iran’s Green Media), a poll, carried out by the Revolutionary Guard in the run-up to the 2009 presidential race, had found that reformist candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi would win close to sixty percent of the total votes in Qom province, the religious capital of Iran.

In a letter to the Director of the Political and Electoral Bureau of Qom Governorate on 20 May 2009, Commander General Rahimi Khorshidvand of the Qom police explained that based on “recent polls” carried by the “Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps in coordination with the intelligence and spy unit of the 17th Ali Ibn Abi Taleb division in Qom province” Mir Hossein Mousavi would win 59.3 % of the province’s total votes, leaving 23.1 %, 16.3 % and 1.3 % of the votes for Ahmadinejad, Karroubi and Mohsen Rezaei respectively.

In the leaked letter titled “The results of a three-week poll at the level of Qom Province,” Khorshidvand states adds that the mentioned poll had been carried among 200,000 citizens in Qom province who represented 4.1% of the total population eligible to vote in Iran’s 2009 presidential election. “The sample space was taken from Qom City’s for regions, along with the Qom Seminary as well as the cities of Kahk, Dastjerd and Salafjegan” says the letter, while adding that the data were “therefore evenly distributed.”

In the end, the letter also reassures the Director of the Political and Electoral Bureau of Qom Governorate that the “intelligence and spy unit of the 17th Ali Ibn Abi Taleb division” in the province are “prepared to carry out appropriate orders.”

It should be noted that according to the election results announced by the Ahmadinejad’s Interior Ministry, he had been able to win a little more than seventy percent of the total votes in Qom province. The latest leaked document is yet another reminder of the massive election fraud in 2009 that was to ensure Ahmadinejad’s re-election as president.

Following the disputed election, many Ahmadinejad apologists claimed that despite protests by millions of Iranians against the announcement of the final vote tallies, he still enjoyed a great of support among poorer, rural and more religious Iranians who had helped him in his re-election. This claim is strongly disputed by many Iran experts such as Eric Hooglund, who has carried out thirty years of research into rural Iran.
