Subject: Call for Concerted and Decisive Action on IRI Continued Human Rights Violations
Body of email:
To the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, and United Nations High Commissioner of Human Rights Navi Pillay:
Your Excellencies,
In the wake of the ongoing human rights atrocities being committed by the ruling regime in Iran, Amnesty International called today for a "concerted and robust response towards the failure of the Iranian authorities to address human rights concerns".
We urge you, acting as a global voice for human rights, to summon diplomatic representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran on Friday, 11 June 2010. The world is looking to you to comply with human rights
and justice for political prisoners in Iran, especially on the eve of the anniversary of the fraudulent June 12, 2009 elections.
On 27 May, Reporters and Human Rights Activists in Iran (RAHANA) reported on the condition of 470 prisoners of conscience, including 67
unjustly sentenced to death. Among the 470, 101 are political activists, 59 are students, 49 are journalists and bloggers, 43 are religious minorities, and 120 are members of Iran's Kurdish ethnic
minority. There are 23 Kurdish political prisoners known to be sentenced to death. The Islamic Republic has carried out 115 executions in 2010 alone, and recently executed 17 people in as many days.
Of the horrifying detention of hundreds of political prisoners, Amnesty International’s interim Secretary-General has said, “The Iranian government is determined to silence all dissenting voices,
while at the same time trying to avoid all scrutiny by the international community into the violations connected to the post-election unrest.”
Amnesty International announced on 9 June that it is launching a one-year campaign to “illustrate the ever-expanding circle of repression in Iran.” The profiles of prisoners of conscience already available on their website elucidate their non-violent struggle for
human rights.
These and other prisoners are systematically tortured while in prison. Women have been denied the right to communicate with other prisoners, and all family visits are subject to approval. Journalist Issa Saharkhiz lost a reported 45 pounds (20 kg) while in solitary confinement in Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison. Director Jafar Panahhi was arrested after making an “illegal” film, and suffered in prison for two months. Freed on bail, he still must face trial and sentencing. Detained Tehran University students Amjad (Hazhir) Kordnejad and Jamal Rahmati have been held incommunicado and are presumed to have been kidnapped by security forces while in a public square. Though arrested in April 2009, Hamed Rouhinejad is accused of bombing a mosque on June 12, instigating a "velvet" revolution, and has been continually denied medical treatment for multiple sclerosis. His condition continues to deteriorate. The whereabouts and conditions of many other prisoners are unknown.
Thousands of Iranians have fled post-election violence but are still subject to Iranian Revolutionary Guard intimidation as refugees in Turkey. Many display symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of physical and psychological torture. The UNHCR officially recognizes over 4,000 refugees in
Turkey, but unofficial estimates are at least double that. Due to visa waivers, IRGC agents are able to cross the border unhindered, while the refugees fear a forcible return to Iran and the inhumane conditions of ensuing imprisonment.
High Commissioner Pillay urged Iran to comply with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and has already stated that she intends to embark on a trip to Iran next year. We firmly believe this is not soon enough to save the lives of hundreds of prisoners of conscience. World leaders must speak loudly and clearly against these crimes.
We respectfully demand that you take immediate, concerted and robust action and summon Iran’s official representative in your country on Friday, 11 June 2010, to repeat your condemnation of the Islamic Republic’s continuing human rights violations.
Sincerely,
Addresses:
TOGETHER - STRONGER! - THANK YOU!!
