An Iranian court will hold its last session on Saturday in the trial of a French teaching assistant arrested on spying charges after a disputed election in June, her lawyer was quoted as saying on Monday. “I hope (Clotilde Reiss) will be exonerated of the charges,” the semi-official Fars News Agency quoted lawyer Mohammad Ali Mahdavi-Sabet as saying. Reiss, who has been out of jail on bail and staying at the French embassy, was accused of taking part in a Western plot to destabilize the Iranian government after the June 12 vote in which President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was re-elected.

As air travel becomes more of a hassle, some seek other options
More than one-quar ter of American travelers now don’t think so, a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds. The survey, taken Jan. 5-6, reveals that 27% of those who’ve flown round trip at least twice during the past year are more likely now than in the past to travel by car, train or another mode of transportation to avoid the inconveniences of flying.

The No. 1 killer in Afghanistan? Poverty.
hether President Obama’s plan to send an additional 30,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan will deny al-Qaeda a haven and turn the tide against the insurgency remains to be seen. But with all this focus on the military side of the war, it is important to remember that the No. 1 killer in Afghanistan isn’t alQaeda or the Taliban. Poverty causes more deaths of Afghan civilians annually than all the IEDs, suicide attacks and roadside bombs combined.

MPs blame ex-official
TEHRAN — Iranian Members of Parliament lifted a blanket of official denial on the country’s post-election upheaval on Sunday by blaming a senior regime insider for abuses that led to the deaths of at least three prisoners in a detention centre. In the first publicly documented admission that abuses occurred in the weeks after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s disputed re-election, Parliament identified Mr Saeed Mortazavi, Tehran’s former Chief Prosecutor, as the main culprit responsible for the scandal related to the Kahrizak facility.

Tehran N-facilities can be bombed: US general
WASHINGTON — The United States has developed contingency plans to address Iran’s nuclear ambitions if negotiations falter between the Islamic republic and Western nations, a top US general said on Sunday. Without elaborating on the contingency plans, General David Petraeus, who heads the US Central Command that oversees the Middle East, the Gulf region and Central Asia, said it could be some time before Washington decides whether to execute them and that diplomatic efforts would continue in the meantime.

RIGHT VOICES DECLARE WAR ON OBAMA
ONE quote hit home for me last week. It is typical of a certain kind of paranoid conservative subculture motivated by extreme antipathy to Barack Obama. Here’s the quote: ‘‘President Obama is leading an extreme, left-wing crusade to bankrupt America.’’ If you spend much time reading far-right and so-called Tea Party blogs, you will be familiar with this theme.

DEADLY BLAST LAYS BARE CIA’S VULNERABILITIES
IN terms of loss of life, the bombing of the CIA base in Khost, Afghanistan, may be the most costly mistake in the agency’s history. So it’s important to look carefully for clues about how it happened, and lessons for the future. CIA veterans cite a series of warning signs that the agency wasn’t paying enough attention to the counter-intelligence threat posed by al-Qa’ida.

Israel and NATO: Between membership and partnership
The idea of integrating Israel into NATO has frequently been advanced as bait to encourage the Jewish state to make the necessary concessions for an Arab-Israeli peace settlement. And some Israeli leaders — Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman, for example — are convinced that joining NATO would act as a vital deterrent against Iran. But it is highly unlikely that Israel’s full integration into the Alliance is feasible from NATO’s standpoint.

American investigators were trying to determine why part of a United Airlines jetliner’s landing gear failed to deploy, forcing terrified passengers to crouch in their seats and brace for a crash before the pilot touched down safely despite scraping the jet’s belly on the runway. Hackers calling themselves the Iranian Cyber Army briefly hijacked the home page of China’s top search engine, Baidu Inc, on Tuesday weeks after doing the same thing to Twitter.com. Prepare to pay more at the pump
MOTORISTS can brace themselves for higher fuel prices this year. Econometrix economist Tony Twine yesterday confirmed concerns among analysts that fuel prices are expected to soar in the near future. In the short term, the bitter cold in the northern hemisphere is expected to increase demand for oil – and hence push up the price. Twine disagreed with some analysts who expected the petrol prices to reach R10 a litre again, arguing that the strong rand buffered the pressure on the price.

Few people welcomed Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s announcement to construct a fence on the border with Egypt more than Southern District Police chief Cmdr. The Southern Police District shares 255 km. of border with Egypt, in addition to the 85 km. of the eastern border with Jordan, and has formed an elite unit called Magen (“shield’) to disrupt the predominantly Beduin-run smuggling networks responsible for bringing in terrorists, prostitutes, illegal foreign workers and drugs.

The News: Iran has quietly been hiding a large part of its nuclear program in networks of tunnels and bunkers across the country, making the facilities much harder for the West to keep track of – or potentially, to attack from the air, it was reported last week. Behind the News: Iran has a long history of skill at tunneling, and its president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was an engineer and tunnel expert before entering politics. To keep Iran’s nuclear facilities from slipping out of its reach, the Pentagon is racing to develop a 15-ton guided bomb called the Massive Ordnance Penetrator that is meant to break through tunnel defenses and destroy what is inside with a lethal blast of air.

IRAN’S ELITE WOULD BE TARGET OF SANCTIONS
Travis Air Force Base, Calif. – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said yesterday the Obama administration has concluded that the best way to pressure Iran to come clean on its nuclear ambitions is to impose sanctions aimed at the country’s ruling elite. “It is clear that there is a relatively small group of decisionmakers inside Iran,” she said. “They are in both political and commercial relationships, and if we can create a sanctions track that targets those who actually make the decisions, we think that is a smarter way to do sanctions. But all that is yet to be decided upon.” Ms. Clinton did not get specific about those inside Iran who might be targeted with new international sanctions, but her allusion to Iranian leaders with political and commercial ties suggested that she was referring to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.
