Will failed terror attack be Obama’s 9/11 moment?
WASHINGTON — Was Christmas Day 2009 the same kind of wake-up call for Barack Obama that Sept. 11, 2001, had been for George W. Bush? The near-miss by a passenger flying into Detroit plotting to blow up an American airliner seems to have shocked this president as much as the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon did the last. Both presidents had had plenty of warnings in the form of prior threats and even incidents.

Revolutıon ın trouble wıth chıldren of the revolutıon
Iran does not seem to have recovered easily from the shock that the presidential election held on June 12 caused. The death of Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri, a powerful dissident voice against the direction the Iran regime took after Khomeini, and the big rallies held during the Ashura ceremonies are recent indications of the ongoing troubles.

On the first day of what was supposed to be tighter screening ordered by the U. The United States demanded more careful screening for people who are citizens of, or are flying from, 14 nations deemed security risks. But enforcement of the U. S. rules appeared spotty. “ Everything is the same. There is no extra security,’’ said an aviation official in Lebanon, one of the countries on the list.

Start security before line for departure
It is the duty of all public officials to “do something” whenever a new threat appears, even if there is nothing sensible to be done. If they don’t make a show of solving the problem, the media will punish them severely. So we have had a vigorous U.S. government response to the recent apprehension of the Underpants Bomber. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was from Nigeria, and he was Muslim.

Israel concerned Iran and Hizbullah forging Fatah terror splinter group
The defense establishment is concerned that Iran and Hizbullah are gaining more influence over terrorist elements in the West Bank and are working to create a splinter and more radical Fatah terrorist group to carry out attacks on its behalf, The Jerusalem Post has learned. One example was the shooting attack two weeks ago in the northern West Bank that killed Rabbi Meir Chai, a father of seven from Shavei Shomron.

Israel’s opening to China COLUMN ONE
The growing power of the UN-based international community is one of the gravest emerging threats to Israel’s national security. This threat stems from two sources. First, the UN-led system of global governance is working to redefine international law by on the one hand whitewashing war crimes by states associated with the majority, and on the other hand rendering it illegal for unpopular countries to take action to protect themselves against aggression.

Baptism of fire awaits commission nominees
MÁIRE GEOGHEGAN-QUINN and her colleagues on the new European Commission have set out an ambitious, but potentially controversial, political programme for the incoming EU executive. Their first task, however, is to survive a pivotal series of confirmation hearings in the European Parliament, which begin next week. The proliferation of nuclear panic is politics at its most ghoulish
Some books are written to be read, others to be put in a cannon and blasted at the seat of power. Two such blasts have just crossed my desk, from academics on either side of the Atlantic. Both are on the same subject, the consequence of the irrational fear of radiation. The first book, Radiation and Reason, is by an Oxford professor of physics, Wade Allison. It narrates the history and nature of nuclear radiation, culminating in an attack on the obsessive safety levels governing nuclear energy.

Troops tried to rescue Moore at Iran border UK troops tried to rescue Moore
British troops in southern Iraq were scrambled to the Iranian border after the abduction of five British hostages in May 2007, in a failed attempt to stop them being taken into Iran, the Guardian has learned. The troops were sent to the border area north of Basra to intercept the kidnappers after receiving intelligence that they were heading to the frontier from Baghdad, but failed to find them. It is unclear whether the British unit arrived too late or went to a different crossing point along the 1,500km border.

CONTROVERSY
The tougher automatic security checks faced by travellers from 14 ‘high-risk’ countries have caused controversy. After clearing passport control, passengers from those listed nations will have to go through a full body scanner or, if the equipment is available, a device that searches for traces of explosives. Passengers will then be subjected to a full body pat down before clearing immigration. A final and thorough search of the hand luggage will be carried out before being allowed to board the aircraft. Upon landing in the US these passengers will then be singled out for extra security at immigration, with the possibility of individual interviews, before they are allowed into the country. The 14 countries on the list are: Afghanistan, Algeria, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

Ally of president tied to Iran deaths
A parliamentary panel in Iran has implicated a senior official and ally of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the deaths of at least three detainees arrested in June during anti-government protests, the Alef Web site has reported. The Web site, which is overseen by a prominent conservative member of Parliament, Ahmad Tavakoli, reported Wednesday that the panel had submitted its report Sunday and that it was expected to be read on the floor of Parliament next week. The man singled out in the report, Saeed Mortazavi, was responsible as Tehran city prosecutor for the arrests of more than 100 journalists, activists and former government officials after the election. Reformers have loathed him since the late 1990s, when he closed scores of reformist newspapers and arrested dozens of journalists. The allegations against Mr. Mortazavi reveal a tug of war between the conservative factions within the establishment: the one led byMr. Ahmadinejad, which favors a severe crackdown against protesters, and his conservative

Iran: military likely to usurp leaders power
Though Iran’s internal crisis is ongoing and gradually increasing, it may not yield victors and losers any time soon, Houda al Husseini wrote in the pan-Arab newspaper Asharq al Awsat. Still, observers maintain that there is an edge to Iran’s opposition because large strata of the Iranian people are turning against the principles of the Islamic Revolution. The reason for this is the Islamic Republic’s spectacular failure in “Islamising” the Iranian people.
