September 18th, 2010 - Summary: The 26th Branch of the Revolutionary Court issued its verdict against Shiva Nazar Ahari early this morning. Shiva Nazar Ahari, journalist and human rights activist was sentenced to 76 lashings and 6 years imprisonment at Izeh prison a remote city in province of Khuzestan, by the Revolutionary Court's 26th branch under the supervision of Judge Pir Abassi. Nazar Ahari intends to fight this verdict in the courts of law.
According to Kaleme, the 26th branch of the Revolutionary Court issued its verdict against journalist and human rights activist, Shiva Nazar Ahari, early this morning. Nazar Ahari intends to fight this verdict in the courts of law.
This 26 year old human rights activist who has been incarcerated in Evin prison for a year was sentenced by the court with charges of being a Mohareb (Enemy of God), colluding against the national security of the country, disturbing public order and propaganda against the regime.
Shiva Nazar Ahari, journalist and member of the Committee of Human Rights Reporters, has spent more than 100 days in solitary confinement during her one year imprisonment. She was arrested in 2009 and transferred to Evin prison one day after the controversial elections. Nazar Ahari was later temporarily released after 3 months on a twenty thousand dollar bail. She was rearrested and sent to prison on December 20th, 2009 on her way to attending the funeral services being held for Ayatollah Montazeri in the city of Qom.
Nazar Ahari was recently granted temporary release from jail based on a fifty thousand dollar bail and is currently free.
