NHK News Summary of victim statistics in several prefectures

Police in Miyagi Prefecture say it's feared that more than 1,000 bodies have been washed ashore in the wake of Friday's devastating tsunami.

Police told reporters on Monday that they had found several hundreds of bodies on several beaches.

Prefectural officials also said about 1,000 bodies were found in Minami-sanriku Town, which was almost completely destroyed by the tsunami. About 10,000 out of the town's 17,000 residents are unaccounted for.

Seven hundred-85 people have been confirmed dead in Miyagi. Police say the final death toll could exceed 10,000 in the prefecture alone.

In Iwate Prefecture, 627 people have been confirmed dead.
Emergency officials are searching for survivors and retrieving victims' bodies in Rikuzen-takata City, but they are facing difficulties due to changing seawater levels.

The city's downtown area was almost completely swept away by the tsunami.

Four hundred-20 people have died and 1,200 people remain missing in Fukushima Prefecture.

In all, 1,887 people are dead and more than 15,000 are missing in northern and eastern Japan.

The Tourism Agency says the safety of about 2,500 people who were traveling in 5 quake-hit prefectures has not been confirmed.

NHK has learned that 450,000 people have fled their homes in 6 prefectures in the quake-hit Tohoku region.
