Re Tenzin Choedrak, Tibetan political prisoner

Email update from the European Parliament

MEP Heidi Hautala has raised this issue with other MEPs. Please see the attached letter.

Appeal Letter
I appeal on behalf of Tenzin Choedrak, a Tibetan political prisoner, who was arrested during March 2008  following his participation in the widespread Uprisings against China’s occupation of Tibet.  Aged 23 he was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment to be served at Tenzin Chodrak is currently serving his prison term in Chushul Prison, near Lhasa. Seemingly targetted by Chinese police for his family’s previous association with political dissent, Tenzin Choedak was reportedly beaten, tortured whilst in the detention center. In his case, both domestic and international norms, particularly the proceedings of the Criminal Procedure Law (CPL) were violated and overlooked. There was no information whether Tenzin received fair hearing or was able to hire his own council lawyer or legal representations. Lhasa Intermediate People’s Court sentenced him to fifteen years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of 10,000 Yuan.  He is due to be released in 2024. I am deeply concerned at conditions surrounding Mr. Tenzin Choedrak and appeal to your office to raise the plight of this individual, most vigorously, at every opportunity with the appropriate Chinese officials. I would also request that any subsequent delegations to Chushul Prison by your officers/representatives insist on unrestricted access to this individual to better determine the situation.
