این اولین باره که کنسولگری برنامه بوده و روز شلوغی در الیمپیک ونکوور بود. البته کنسولگری خودش رو جاده الیمپیکه و آدم از سرتاسر دنیا ما رو دیدند. پلاکارد ها بر علیه فروش زره پوشها و برای فشار رو دولت چین برای حمایت از حقوق مردم ایران بودند.

کمپین زنگ زدن و ایمیل کردن به کنسولگری هم آغاز شد. یک بیانه به انگلیسی و یک به فارسی داده شد. برنامه باعث هماهنگی بین گروه و اشخاص مختلفی شد. باعث شد که جمعیت ایرانی در ونکوور در مورد چین بیشتر بداند و بیشتر بپردازد و زیر ذربین خود قرار دهد، زیرا که نسبتا خوب تبلیغ شده بود. من سه نوع واکنش در این جمعیت دیدم. خیلی ها حمایت کردند و مهم دانستند. خیلی ها به موضوع کاملا باز بودند ولی به اندازه اطلاع نداشتند. تک و توک آدمی میدیدی که میگه چون دولت ایران را محکوم میکنی امپریالیست هستی، در واقع همان حرفی که ننگه ما میگه. از ویکتوریا هم علاقه نشان دادند.

یک چیز دیگه هم این بود که ما گروه های آزادی برای تبت هم دعوت کردیم. با اینکه الان خیلی موقع بدی برای آنها بود یه ده نفری از آنها آمدند. یک فرهنگ دیگر هم آنجا به اسمه فالون گانگ آماده بود، یعنی رو هم سه فرهنگ با هم متحد بودند.

This was the first time Iranians in Vancouver gathered in front of the Chinese Consulate, and was a very important and busy day for the Olympics. However, the Consulate General's Office is itself on one of the major Olympic roads and thus people from all over the world saw us there.

Two statements, one in English and the other in Persian, were prepared for this event. The slogans were 1- against China's selling of anti-riot vehicles to the controversial and pathological, human rights violating "Islamic Republic" government in Iran, and 2- to put pressure on China to start supporting human rights (generally and in Iran). A campaign to phone and email the Consulate General in China also began.

On the campaign, I noticed three different main reactions. First, many understood the important of the event and fully supported it. Second, many were very open to the issue but did not have enough information about it. Third, there were some random encounters alleging that protesting against China is tantamount to building an imperialist movement in Iran, repeating the Islamic Republic's lobby and state media around the world.

We had invited the Free Tibet groups, and despite their very busy schedule a number of them showed up as well. Overall 3 different nations and cultures were united in solidarity for human rights in this event.

The effects of the event were as follows:

1. Initiating a dialogue in the community (Iranian and non-Iranian) about China's role in Iranian human rights violations
2. Raising awareness on China's human rights violations in Iran and domestically
3. Solidifying a human-rights approach for campaigning for freedom in Iran
4. Uniting with other cultures and exploring parallels between our nations and cultures in our human rights goals

Appendix 1: Statement in English

Iran Wants Human Rights and Freedom

The movement in Iran is based on the seeking of national interests through respect and peace between all nations. It seeks to achieve democracy where the majority rules, yet minority rights are safeguarded. It seeks a structure for freedom of thought and expression, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly and freedom to choose one’s representatives, among other things. The movement has a host of other goals, relating to women’s rights, economic rights, and other. This striving is for unity and stability in Iranian society.

It is a domestic, and not an imperialist, agenda. Even as mentioned by the Under Secretary General of the United Nations, Iran has long engaged in human rights domestically, possessing one of the first written declarations of human rights (http://www.facebook.com/l/d7541;www.youtube.com/watch?v=YebB4nVw_Mg). It is unwarranted to associate the Iranian drive for freedom and human rights as some imperialist movement.

We will continue with our goal to replace dictatorship with democracy in Iran through effective non-violent means, such as strikes, building public awareness about what is going on in Iran, and developing a more coordinated movement with others who oppose the Islamic Republic.

اتحاد و یک پارچگی ایران عزیز

تامین منافع کشور بر اساس صلح و دوستی و احترام به تمامی ملل جهان.

پی ریزی یک ساختار سیاسی دموکراتیک براساس همۀ موازین و اصول پذیرفته شدۀ منشور حقوق بشر

تأسیس نظام برآمده از آرای ملت و حاکمیت اراده ملی

هیچ مذهب و مسلکی، بهیچ عنوان و دست آویزی نبایستی مانع تحقق و تامین هیچیک از آزادی ها و حقوق شهروندان شود؛

برقراری حقوق مساوی برای مردم بدون توجه به قوم، قبیله، رنگ، نژاد و زبان.
