Security forces arrest 30 ‘mournful mothers’ in park
TEHERAN: Iranian security forces have arrested 30 so-called ‘‘mournful mothers’’ who were protesting in a Teheran park over the death or disappearance of their children in post-election unrest, an opposition website said yesterday. Kaleme.org, quoting witnesses, said the women were rounded up on Saturday afternoon in Laleh park. ‘‘Around 4pm we were in Laleh park and there were more than 100 police who were not allowing the mothers to sit on the benches or gather in groups,’’ a witness told Kaleme.org. ‘‘There were around 70 mothers in the park and the security chased them out. A number of them escaped but around 30 were arrested and were forcefully taken into police vans.’’ The women were driven to a police station, the website said without giving more information. ‘‘Mournful mothers’’ are a group of mothers whose children have gone either missing or killed in the aftermath of protests unleashed following the contested re-election in June of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Iranian protests erupt into violence killing at least five
TEHRAN, Iran (The Associated Press) — Iranian security forces fired on stonethrowing protesters in the centre of the capital Sunday in one of the bloodiest confrontations in months, opposition Web sites and witnesses said. At least five people were killed. Some accounts of the violence in Tehran were vivid and detailed, but they could not be independently confirmed because of government restrictions on media coverage.

Shots fired at Iranian opposition figure
TEHERAN (AP) – Pro-government demonstrators opened fire on the car of one of Iran’s opposition leaders and shattered his windows, but he escaped unharmed from the rare armed attack on a top reformist, his Web site reported on Friday. Hard-liners called last week for the execution of opposition leaders, raising tensions that could spark a cycle of political violence beyond the government’s control. Mahdi Karroubi blamed authorities after shots were fired at his car late on Thursday from a crowd of about 500 government supporters surrounded by police in the town of Qazvin, some 140 km. west of Teheran.

Ahmadinejad: Iran will not back down one iota
A soldier was shot dead by an intoxicated friend in Kiryat Haim, north of Haifa, on Friday night in what police suspect is a firearms accident. Emergency services were called to an address in Kiryat Haim by a man who told an operator that his friend had been shot. The caller, a security guard under the influence of alcohol, called paramedics and police twice to ensure they were on their way to the address, before fleeing the scene. He then stopped approximately 100 meters from his home, where he was arrested by police.

Elite force’s growing role in Iran may limit U. S. options
tehran — A major expansion in the role played by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps is giving the elite force new economic and political clout, but it could also complicate efforts by the United States and its allies to put pressure on the Iranian regime, according to U. S. officials and outside analysts. Commanders of the Revolutionary Guard say its growth represents a logical expansion for an organization that is not a military force but a popular movement that protects the ideals of the 1979 Islamic revolution

Inside Osama bin Laden’s family It’s not easy when dad’s called Osama
WITH a book written by one of Osama bin Laden’s sons, and news of a daughter sheltering in the Saudi Embassy in Iran, some of the blanks are being filled in on the life of the September 11, 2001 mastermind’s large family, including details of his harsh parenting style. Recently, the son, Omar bin Laden, revealed that many of the children who had been with their father in Afghanistan escaped to Iran following the 2001 US-led invasion, and were still together in a walled compound under Iranian guard.

Iran executes six
Iran has executed six men found guilty of drug smuggling, the semi-official Fars news agency reported yesterday. Papers point to arms for Iran
Legal documents have emerged showing North Korean arms and explosives on a plane chartered by an Auckland company were bound for Iran. They also reveal the banking method used by SP Trading Ltd of Queen St, Auckland, providing evidence that money went through a New York bank account. North Korea and Iran are both subject to American economic sanctions and the documents will help build the US Justice Department’s case against SP Trading.

China flexing its growing muscle
WASHINGTON — As though there had not been trouble enough in 2009, the year ended with a nasty spat between Britain and China, a tiff that might portend more trouble ahead as the world comes to terms with China’s new assertiveness. The proximate cause of rift was the execution in China of a Briton, Akmal Shaikh, for smuggling heroin into China. The family of the 53-year-old father of three say he was mentally unstable and was duped into carrying a suitcase stuffed with heroin.

Iran: UN observatory near border is a spy station
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran claimed Wednesday that a newly built U.N. station to detect nuclear explosions was built near its border to give the West a post to spy on the country. The construction of the seismic monitoring station was completed last week in neighboring Turkmenistan, a few miles from the Iranian border. It’s one of roughly 275 such stations that are operational worldwide and that can detect seismic activity set off by weak nuclear blasts and even shock waves from nuclear experiments.

¿ ISLAMOFOBIA? ¿ NO SERÁ CRISTIANOFOBIA?

Iran rebuffs threat of new sanctions
TEHRAN: Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Saturday that further UN Security Council sanction will not deter Tehran from pursuing its controversial nuclear program. He also vowed that Iran will not back down “one iota” in the face of international pressures over the atomic work, which the West fears may be a cover for weapons development despite Iran’s persistent denial. “They issued several resolutions and sanctioned Iran ... They think Iranians will fall on their knees over these things but they are mistaken”
